Powerful Practices 3.0: A day of learning for teachers by teachers! I enjoyed stopping by this year's third annual Powerful Practices Staff Development Day for district elementary school teachers and Principals, held at Gunn High School. Keynote speaker Dr. Thomas Hehir from Harvard spoke about how the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) support differentiation and personalized learning in the classroom, without additional stress on teachers.
This is a conference format day, so teachers chose from a wide variety of courses such as: "Structured Word Inquiry: Developing literacy and critical thinking through scientific inquiry of the written word," "What Matters Most in Reading Workshop" (taught by Teachers College presenter Laurie Pessah), "TRU Math with an Equity Lens," "Innovation, Creativity, STEM Challenges--Design Thinking is for anyone!," and "Building Sensory Friendly Classrooms for Learning." Meanwhile, over at Paly, our secondary teachers and principals were doing similarly exciting work. It's a terrific opportunity for our teachers to collaborate with colleagues across the district and across grade levels.
